Abstract, Times New Roman, 9 point, 1 line This study was carried out in order to determine the mental images of primary, secondary and high school senior students regarding the concept of earthquake and to reveal the similarities and differences between their grade levels. The study was designed according to the phenomenological method, one of the qualitative research methods. The research data were obtained from the state schools in Buca in Izmir in the academic year 2020/2021. Participants in the were determined using the maximum diversity and criteria sampling methods, one of the purposeful sampling methods. The research data were obtained with a structured form with open-ended questions such as "Earthquake is like / similar because ……." and analyzed with content analysis technique. 277 valid metaphors were reached from a total of 461 students. 40 different types of 82 metaphors produced by primary school senior students were collected in eight conceptual categories. 44 different kinds of 92 metaphors produced by secondary school senior students were collected in eleven categories. And also 62 different types of 103 metaphors produced by senior high school students in eleven categories. From the findings obtained, it was concluded that there are great similarities in metaphors and categories between grade levels, that all participants see the phenomenon of earthquake as an "end" and that the most produced metaphor is "Disaster". In addition, another result of the study was that as the grade level increased, the students' level of seeing earthquake as a natural event did not increase, but decreased in parallel with the education they received. Earthquake perception, metaphor, primary, secodary and high school senior students

Bu araştırma ilkokul, ortaokul ve lise son sınıf öğrencilerinin deprem kavramına ilişkin sahip oldukları zihinsel imgeleri belirlemek ve sınıf düzeyleri arasındaki benzerlik ve farklılıkları ortaya koyabilmek amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışma nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden olgubilim yöntemine göre desenlenmiştir. Araştırma verileri 2020/2021 eğitim öğretim yılında İzmir ili Buca ilçesindeki devlet okullarından sağlanmıştır. Çalışma grubunu oluşturan katılımcılar amaçlı örneklem yöntemlerinden maksimum çeşitlilik ve ölçüt örneklemesi yöntemleri ile belirlenmiştir. Araştırma verileri ‘Deprem ……gibidir/benzer, çünkü…….’ şeklinde açık uçlu soru bulunan yapılandırılmış form ile elde edilmiş ve içerik analizi tekniği ile çözümlenmiştir. Toplam 461 öğrenciden 277 geçerli metafora ulaşılmıştır. İlkokul son sınıf öğrencilerinin ürettikleri 40 farklı çeşit 82 metafor sekiz kavramsal kategoride toplanmıştır. Ortaokul son sınıf öğrencilerinin ürettikleri 44 farklı çeşit 92 metafor on bir kategoride toplanmıştır. Lise son sınıf öğrencilerinin ürettikleri 62 farklı 103 metafor da on bir kategoride toplanmıştır. Elde edilen bulgulardan sınıf düzeyleri arasında metafor ve kategorilerde büyük benzerlikler olduğu, tüm katılımcıların deprem olgusunu bir ‘son’ olarak gördükleri, en çok üretilen metaforun ‘Felaket’ olduğu sonuçlarına ulaşılmıştır. Ayrıca sınıf düzeyi yükseldikçe öğrencilerin aldıkları eğitime paralele olarak deprem olgusunu bir doğa olayı olarak görme düzeylerinin artmayıp aksine azaldığı araştırmada elde edilen bir başka sonuç olmuştur. Bu bağlamda afet eğitimlerinin uygulanmasına yönelik öneriler geliştirilmiştir.
